Grandma Jo swore this was the easiest way to make everyone grab seconds at family game night.


 This frozen fruit salad is my spin on Grandma Jo’s “everyone-grabs-seconds” pan of goodness she always set out at family game night. It’s creamy, cold, and just sweet enough, with frozen mixed berries and banana swirled into vanilla yogurt and a drizzle of honey. You mix everything in one bowl, pour it into a glass loaf pan, and freeze it until firm. It’s the kind of make-ahead dessert that lets you focus on the people around the table, not babysitting something in the oven.

Slice or scoop the frozen fruit salad straight from the glass loaf pan and serve it on small dessert plates or in bowls during game night, movie night, or backyard cookouts. It pairs really well with salty snacks like popcorn, pretzels, or chips, because the creamy sweetness balances out the crunch and salt. You can also serve it alongside simple store-bought cookies or graham crackers, or top each slice with a few extra berries or a small dollop of whipped cream if you want to dress it up a bit.
Grandma Jo’s Frozen Fruit Salad
Servings: 6-8
Ingredients
2 cups frozen mixed berries
2 medium ripe bananas, sliced
2 cups vanilla yogurt (regular or Greek)
3 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for extra flavor)
Pinch of salt (optional, to balance sweetness)
Nonstick spray or a thin layer of neutral oil for greasing the glass loaf pan
Directions
Lightly grease a glass loaf pan with nonstick spray or a thin layer of neutral oil. This helps the frozen fruit salad release more easily and keeps the creamy layers visible along the sides.
In a medium mixing bowl, add the vanilla yogurt, honey, vanilla extract (if using), and a small pinch of salt. Stir until everything is smooth and well combined.
Add the frozen mixed berries to the bowl. Gently fold them into the yogurt mixture so the colors start to streak and marble but don’t fully blend. You want visible berry swirls, not a solid pink color.
Add the sliced bananas and fold them in just until they’re evenly distributed. Be gentle so the banana pieces stay mostly intact and don’t turn mushy.
Pour the mixture into the prepared glass loaf pan, spreading it out into an even layer. Use a spoon or spatula to lightly swirl the top so the berry streaks show on the surface for a pretty, marbled look.
Place the loaf pan on a flat spot in your freezer. Freeze for at least 4 hours, or until the fruit salad is firm enough to slice but not rock hard. For easiest serving at game night, aim for 4–6 hours of freeze time.
When you’re ready to serve, let the pan sit on the speckled kitchen counter for 5–10 minutes to soften slightly. Run a butter knife around the edges if needed. Slice into thick bars or scoop with a large spoon, making sure each serving has some berries and banana.
Serve immediately, and return any leftovers to the freezer. Cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap or foil to keep the top from getting icy between rounds of seconds.
Variations & Tips
For picky eaters, you can use only their favorite fruit instead of mixed berries—try just strawberries or just blueberries—and slice the berries smaller so there are fewer big chunks. If your crew prefers things less sweet, cut the honey down to 1–2 tablespoons, or skip it entirely if your vanilla yogurt is already sweetened. For extra creaminess, replace 1/2 cup of the yogurt with softened cream cheese or whipped topping before folding in the fruit. To add crunch, sprinkle a handful of granola, crushed graham crackers, or chopped nuts over the top before freezing. If you want individual portions for little hands, divide the mixture into silicone muffin cups or small plastic cups, add a spoon or popsicle stick, and freeze. You can also make it dairy-free by using a plant-based vanilla yogurt and swapping the honey for maple syrup or agave. For a lighter option at game night, serve thinner slices alongside fresh fruit instead of cookies or heavy desserts, so everyone still feels like they’re getting a treat without overdoing it.
